| Description: | Advances in Experimental Mechanics continues a series of conferences organised by the British Society for Strain Measurement (BSSM), which aims to bring together and promote academic and industrial research in stress, strain and vibration measurement. The research contributions in the proceedings represent the state-of-art in experimental techniques and model validation, and incorporate a diverse range of applications and disciplines in mechanics, including biomedical, automotive, structural, aerospace and sports engineering. The common theme of the research papers is experimental techniques, signifying the strength of experimental data in gaining physical insights into engineering materials, systems and structures. The proceedings consists of seven themes, which highlight the current major research topics: noise and vibration, composite structures, fatigue and fracture, optical techniques, sensor technology, high strain rate applications, and strain gauge applications. The two keynote lectures indicate how measurement techniques are applied in sports engineering, to improve design of sports equipment and sports performance, and in composites, to characterise high strain rate behaviour. The Measurements Lecture, a traditional highlight of this conference series, is on high temperature behaviour under creep conditions. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the BSSM and the proceedings also offers a history of the key developments in experimental mechanics as chronicled by its journal Strain. |
