Description: The application of ceramic materials is currently expanding into a wide range of areas, e.g. gas turbine assembly, engine components, electronic devices, bio-materials etc. But because ceramics pose problems with respect to their brittleness and low reliability, due to their intrinsic nature and/or processing defects, research related to the deformation and fracture of ceramics is still a subject of high priority.
The time-dependent mechanical response of engineering ceramics has been studied for a long time. Long-term responses include mantle convection of the order of 106 years, creep deformation of the order of months to hours, and slow crack growth of the order of seconds, etc. These studies have always been carried out independently by various researchers in their own individual field: for example, shock wave, dynamic and/or static fracture, machining, high-temperature creep or geology. The 2nd Yamazaki International Symposium on "Time Dependent Mechanical Response of Engineering Ceramics" brought together, for the first time, researchers from these very different fields.
This book comprises 26 papers which cover the most recent developments and the most important trends in current research in the field of time-dependent deformation and fracture of ceramics.
