Description: Sol-gel technology is an important route for the fabrication of inorganic and inorganic-organic composite materials. As is typical of chemical synthesis routes, a wide range of parameters can be used to tailor the product.
For the commercial exploitation of sol-gel materials, however, the advantages of components made in this way have to be fully realized, since mere substitution of sol-gel materials will not usually repay the enormous development costs. But once this is fully appreciated, the sol-gel process becomes a very valuable tool for product and process innovation, and is an interesting example of how interdisciplinary research, development and technology can lead to innovation in industry.
The present work treats the subject of sol-gel production from a variety of viewpoints. It will be of interest both to industrial researchers and to university scientists working on technological applications.
