| Description: | In many engineering applications of composite and laminate materials, damage and failure can be caused by impact of various types. Low-velocity impact is potentially dangerous because it can produce extensive sub-surface delamination that may not be visible on the surface. High-velocity impact produced by projectiles, shock waves and fragments from exploding ammunition is a highly dynamic event, leading to the penetration or perforation of composites. All impact damage is detrimental to the mechanical and structural performance of composites. Accurate evaluation of the damaged state, and a fundamental understanding of the effect of damage upon the resultant properties are therefore essential for the proper design and application of composite materials. The strain-rate dependence of material behavior, fracture propagation and energy-absorbing capacity are also of paramount importance from both the materials science and structural mechanics perspectives. Whereas plenty of reference books on the fracture and failure of composite materials in general are available, few of them deal specifically with the characterization of impact damage and the prediction of damage resistance in composite and laminate materials. The aim of this book is to provide engineers, designers and materials scientists with an improved insight into these important topics. It will serve as an invaluable reference work on recent developments in the field. PART 1: IMPACT DAMAGE AND BALLISTIC IMPACT. 1.1 Impact Damage Characterization. 1.2 Impact Damage. 1.3 Resistance and Tolerance. 1.4 Ballistic Impact Response. PART 2: STRAIN-RATE EFFECT, ENERGY ABSORPTION AND MODELLING. 2.1 Strain-Rate Effect and Fracture. 2.2. Impact Energy. 2.3 Absorption and Crashworthiness. 2.4 Modelling. |
