| Description: | This publication focuses on the structural and chemical characterization of interfaces and their kinetic, mechanical and electrical properties. The size of the volume, consisting of almost 200 papers and over 900 pages, reflects the great current interest in the field. The papers presented cover a wide variety of interfacial systems. The structural and chemical characterization of interfaces concentrates on combined experimental and theoretical studies of the local atomic structure, and the local densities of electronic states. Techniques with very high spatial resolution were used in these studies. In general, it is found that a certain maturity of the subject has been attained; in that theories are presented which can draw together the many strands of experimental observations, bringing coherence and depth of understanding to the subject. Other papers are concerned with the vexing problem of relating the properties of individual grain boundaries to the properties of polycrystals as a whole. In view of these advances, the engineering of interfaces so as to obtain materials having required properties is becoming an increasingly attainable goal. Intergranular and Interphase Boundaries in Materials is intended to promote both a better theoretical understanding of interfaces and grain boundaries in materials, as well as to encourage improvements in technologies which use materials whose properties are controlled by interfaces. |
