| Description: | Ceramic matrix composites are under intense investigation internationally to find their useful application in higher temperature structures, particularly in aerospace propulsion systems. The limitation of monolithic ceramic components for strength and fracture toughness are well known. Ceramic composites on the other hand provide greater capabilities in strain tol-erance, fracture toughness and strength characteristics. As a result, interest in processing, microstructure, analysis and design applications continue to evolve for this class of compos-ites. The continuous fiber CMCs are aimed at application into higher performance components in the propulsion system. On the other hand, the whisker reinforced CMCs have broader appli-cation range in the industrial and automotive area. In this volume, processing advances and application experience of CMCs are discussed by a number of researchers. In addition, mi-crostructural and mechanical behavior of CMCs are presented as a complementary section. These papers present a coherent view of some of the recent advances in the field. |
